Note: Before you try to add any images/media into your post, be sure to SAVE YOUR WORK FIRST. If you try to publish or save your post and it doesn’t work, you should be able to go “BACK” in the browser which will take you back to the content you were editing without anything being lost.
How to Create a Post
- In your profile, from the very top admin menu, under Dashboard, select “Create Post”
- Enter a title for your post.
- If this is to be a post (article) then think of something catchy that will capture people’s interest.
- If this is your Major Supporter Listing, put in your company name.
- If this is your Author listing, put in your name as it appears on your books.
- If this is going to be your column or banner advertisement you can put your business name, your book title, or something else that is attention grabbing.
- Type in any content you want to appear in your post.
- Save your work regularly. Preview your work as you go. If you don’t want this to be visible to people yet, change the visibility from “Public” to “Private”
- Add in any images or media you want into your post to make it relevant and appealing to people. Preview your work as you go. (see below for more information about adding images).
- Select the Category for your post. This is important as it will set where your post appears. See the below list for an explanation. (Note: if you do not see these categories it means you have not been approved as a major supporter. Please read this page and write to @dean
- Add in any Post Tags that you like to be used as keywords for your post. Usually about 3-5 is best. That is, if you are article is about meditation for beginners, you could use keywords like beginner, meditation, learn meditation.
- In the Custom Community settings, select “Post Template on” and select which template you’d like. We recommend “img-over-content”, as this will ensure your post displays best with the website template.
- Also, check the boxes that say. Hide avatar, Hide date/category, Hide tags, Hide comment-info. This will ensure your page appears nice and clean, unless you want these options to appear on your page.
- When you are ready, PUBLISH your content.
Adding Images/Media or Featured Images
The featured image is used as the image for column advertisements, post listings and on the Major Supporters listing page, kind of like generating a special thumbnail.
- If you are inserting an image or media into your post, first put your cursor where you want the image/media to appear.
- If setting a featured image, choose the “Set Featured Image” link. If adding a normal image/media, choose the image or media icon from above the content box.
- Push the Select Files button, browse and find your image (if you’ve already added files you can find them in the “Media Gallery”).
- Wait for the image/media to load. IMPORTANT NOTE: often after uploading the image, the thumbnail may not display the thumbnail in the media gallery until AFTER it is saved. Continue on to step 7, and see if it appears after being saved. If not, then try reloading it.
- Once the image has loaded give the featured image a Title and Alternative text. These are used in the code within the page and helps with SEO, but will also display for people when they hover over the image. The Title and Alt Text can be the same and is typically just some words about what the image is e.g. “Company XYZ” or “Person sitting in meditation”.
- If setting as a featured image, then click the “Use as Featured Image” link.
- If setting as a normal image/media, select the size and location where you want it to appear in your post. Then select “Insert into Post”. This will inject the image/media into your post.
- Then click “Save All Changes” down the bottom.
- Once they are saved, closed the “media library” dialogue by pushing the X on the top right. Your Featured image or image/media will now be added for your post.
Adjusting Images to the Right Size for Featured Posts
Featured posts appear in the slideshow at the top of the home page. Understanding how featured images assigned to your posts are dynamically displayed will help you understand how to create them to be the right dimensions. The slideshow does not resize the images. The images are aligned centered. So your images need to be big enough to fill this space and any excess is simply not displayed around the edges.
The slideshow for featured posts is made up of one image resized twice – one for the main slideshow image on the left and the other as the smaller thumbnail on the right-hand side. The slideshow image is 756 x 250px. The thumbnail on the right however will appear cropped at this size. It is therefore best to set your featured image to be 756px x 567px which will ensure it stays at a 4:3 dimension ratio. Doing this will make both the larger slideshow image on the left and the smaller thumbnail image on the right appear correctly, however the larger slideshow image will crop off part of the top and bottom of your image. The trick therefore is that you have to center what you want to be in the big image on the slideshow.
